According to an internal Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) document uncovered by the Associated Press, the Administration originally projected that 3.3 million Americans would enroll in insurance through the exchanges. But, since the program’s October 1st launch date - up until November 30th - only a mere 364,682 individuals actually chose a plan. A number that’s less than half of the administration’s target of 800,000 enrollments that they were hoping to have by the end of November.
Seeing Double
According to the Washington Examiner, the HHS noted that it is trying to correct a problem that has thrown a wrench into the exchange cog; that being, some of the signups may have been counted twice, thus potentially overstating the number. HHS said that while FEDERAL data had been scrubbed of duplicates, the “duplication” issue applied to numbers coming from some of the 14 STATE-based exchanges, which were ultimately responsible for 62% of the signups.
Aims, Means and Goals
With a 3.3 million January 1st signup goal, more than 2.9 million will need to sign up for healthcare between now and the New Year. With those individuals having until December 23rd to pick a plan and until December 31st to pay the premiums on said plans. Then there’s the Congressional Budget Office, who has decided to “kick it up a notch” in terms of enrollee projections, as they ambitiously anticipate 7 million signups by March 31st, the end of ACA open enrollment.
