Americans insure their health, their homes, autos, lives and even their pets, so it's no wonder that celebrities will insure their body parts or appendages - especially those that play a key role in their money making abilities.
Anatomical Assets
For Hollywood celebrities and sport icons, image and performance are everything. Whether it's a preeminent singing voice, iconic legs, or a bright smile; a-list features can mean the difference between being a megastar, or just another pretty face without a job. Therefore, many stars and celebrities take out insurance policies to protect their most valuable assets, and many times over, that means a particular part of their anatomy.
Publicity Stunts?
While some are suspicious that body part insurance policies are simply publicity stunts, most cases are legitimate and typically brokered by either major corporations, or entities like Lloyd's of London. Established in the 1600's, celebrities and even mere mortals, have come to rely on Lloyd's of London to insure their most recognizable and valuable anatomy, against any unforeseen disaster that might befall them.
Below is a sampling of celebrities and entertainers who have made headlines by insuring their most valuable physical assets.
A LEG UP ON THE COMPETITION
By far the most popular insured body parts, these celebs have a leg up on the competition with their policies:
Rihanna - Legs ($1M) - Venus Breeze, a line of female razors, named the hip-hop celebrity as having the Celebrity Legs of a Goddess in 2007, and in turn took out a 1M policy on her gorgeous gams.
Heidi Klum - Legs ($2.2M) - Heidi Klum insured her legs for $2.2 million. The process included Lloyd's of London inspecting her legs and detailing any defects. Her left leg had a scar from a previous injury, so its value is lower than her right leg.
Tina Turner - Legs ($3.2M). Crooner Tina Turner had her iconic legs insured for $3.2 million. While some internet stories claim the singer intentionally burned her legs to collect her insurance payout, Snopes squashed the rumors as being untrue.
Jamie Lee Curtis - Legs ($2.8M) - Rumor has it that L'Eggs pantyhose took out the 2M+ policy on Curtis' gams when she was their brand ambassador in the 1980's.
Michael Flatley - Legs ($39M) - the Irish "Lord of the Dance" supposedly has his leaping limbs insured upwards of $39M.
SAY CHEESE...
America Ferrera - Teeth ($10M) America's teeth and gums, not her smile, were insured for $10 million. Rumor has it that toothpaste titan AquaFresh took out the policy with Lloyd's of London to cover "any reasonable or necessary dental treatment, costs or expenses" caused by any potential accident.
Julia Roberts - Smile ($30M) In contrast to America Ferrara, Hollywood's Sweetheart, Julia Roberts, purportedly had her instantly recognizable smile insured for $30 million. We assume this means teeth, gums, as well as her famous trout pout.
SECURED SIRENS
Bruce Springsteen - Vocal Cords ($6M) No one can mistake the voice of "the Boss," so the esteemed NJ rocker had his vocal cords insured for $6 million.
Marlene Dietrich - Voice ($1M) The legendary screen siren's voice was sultry, sexy and alluring, just like her, so the cool $1M policy she took out was fitting.
Rod Stewart - Vocal Cords ($6M or $15.5M) The rocker turned crooner places a higher price on his vocal cords than Bruce Springsteen. Stewart insured his raspy song box for $15.5 million. However, other reports say it's valued at $6M, similarly to "the Boss."
TREASURE CHEST
Dolly Parton - Breasts (600k or $3.8M) While the hip-hop culture of today may not remember her from the 70s, Dolly Parton took her country music career to the top by promoting her two largest assets along with her bouncy personality. Rumor has it that her breasts are insured for either $600,000 or $3.8 million.
Madonna - Breasts ($2M) It's been reported that Madonna actually tried to insured her breasts for $12 million, but Lloyd's of London refused.
Holly Madison - Breasts ($1M) The former Playboy Playmate and reality TV star admitted that if something happened to her breasts she would "be out for a few months and probably out a million dollars, as their her primary money makers right now."
RANDOM BITS
Jennifer Lopez - Rear End ($27M or $300M) A fitting word to describe Jennifer Lopez would be: callipygian. Of Greek origin, the word means "having well-shaped buttocks." Many reports suggest that Ms. Lopez insured her booty for $27 million. However, some sources report the amount of the policy to be worth $300 million. Either way, J-Lo's backside is backed financially if something goes south.
Gene Simmons - Tongue ($1M) The iconic member of KISS became famous for wagging his long and gifted tongue on-stage, and took out an insurance policy of $1 million to protect it.
Keith Richards - Middle Finger ($1.6M) It's not what you think! The Rolling Stones lead guitar player wouldn't be unable to strum his instrument without that middle digit. So, he insured it for $1.6 million just in case.
